In this policy brief, prepared as part of the Achieving the Dream initiative, the author highlights the pros and cons of three varying levels of state oversight in community college assessment and placement. The brief includes general policy information from Florida, New Mexico, North Carolina, Texas, and Virginia, as well as short case studies from Maryland and Minnesota. The author offers several recommendations for strengthening policies for assessing incoming students and supporting student success in developmental courses.
