This literature review analyzes social science, education, and policy studies from the last 25 years to identify factors that contribute to and inhibit community college success. Focusing on aspects of opportunity structure, institutional policy, and student attributes, the author summarizes past research on issues such as governance, financial aid and economic hardship, developmental education, classroom practices, and academic preparation; offers brief notes on current promising reform initiatives; and outlines suggestions for future research.
